Is pneumonia contagious?

Pneumonia basically refers to any infection or inflammation caused in the respiratory tracts or the lungs. It is mainly caused by virus bacteria and diseases producing pathogens. Pneumonia can turn fatal for the people whose age is nearly 65 yeas or above. People with bronchitis, heart disease or other chronic disease can also suffer from life threatening pneumonia.

Mainly people who have weak immune system have the chances to contract these diseases from people who have these viruses. Most of the pneumonia causing bacteria is found in humans mainly in the throat of human beings. Once the immunity gets weakened these bacteria residing in human bodies cause negative affects in the person’s body.

There are not just bacteria that cause pneumonia but even viruses and other pathogens too cause pneumonia. Symptoms of pneumonia vary according to the type of organism causing the infection.

Bacterial

Bacterial pneumonia results in chilling shivers in body, high fever accompanied by chest pain and severe cough which produces excessive mucous which is rust colored. This type of pneumonia can be easily treated with the help of antibiotics.

Viral

There is other type of pneumonia caused by the viruses known as the viral pneumonia; this is accompanied by dry cough, muscle pain and weakness of the individual. The symptoms are not easily visible in case of viral pneumonia. It is not very severe most of the time but if immunity further weakness it can turn deadly. Proper rest and treatment at home can easily suppress and end the viral pneumonia, but if the problem continues for a long time then it can really be fatal.

The most common reason of pneumonia to turn fatal is due to the inflammation in lungs and infection in the bloodstream.

Prevention

Getting annual flu shot is required to prevent yourself from the complications of pneumonia. People with bacterial pneumonia should definitely go for vaccination so as to prevent themselves. So better take vaccines on time and do take proper rest.
